The Imran Khan Show

by Feisal Naqvi

View from Bar

A star politician’s unreal world.

At the very beginning of The Truman Show, Truman Burbank steps out of his picture-perfect house and is startled when a large spotlight falls out of the picture-perfect blue sky and slams into the ground next to his feet. Those who have seen the movie know the explanation for the mysterious occurrence: Truman lives in a fake world, a giant television set in which everyone he knows is actually an actor. Only Truman himself doesn’t know that his life is an elaborate drama.

Aamir Qureshi—AFP

Aamir Qureshi—AFP

I mention The Truman Show because I am not sure how else to convey the increasingly absurd world in which Imran Khan lives. Like the protagonist played by Jim Carrey, Khan is in a position where his picture-perfect reality no longer makes any sense, where large metallic objects fall out of a clear blue sky for no apparent reason. The only difference being that in the Imran Khan Show mysterious objects not only appear out of nowhere, they also blow up.

In the case of Truman, his failure to see the real world was because he had never known another. In Khan’s case, his failure to see reality seems to be driven by a romantic vision of the Pakhtun warrior. Whether Khan acquired his dewy-eyed vision through a love of Kipling or while living in the lesser-known tribal agency of Zaman Park is immaterial. What is material is that Khan appears permanently wedded to a deeply heroic view of the tribal areas as the Pakistani equivalent of the Sparta portrayed in 300—a hard land populated by hard men, flinty of eye and scanty of word.

Khan’s romantic delusions would not matter if he wasn’t also the leader of Pakistan’s third largest political party, entrusted with the governance of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. But he is. And because Khan’s rose-colored views of Pakhtun culture and history are about as useful for governing that province as Beatrix Potter’s cutesy-poo Peter Rabbit stories are to understanding the biology of bunnies, the net result is a gigantic mess.

It is not as if the mess was not anticipated. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s anti-terror policy has been the target of criticism from day one. For many people, the policy was reminiscent of the cartoon showing two professors in front of a blackboard filled with impressive looking numbers and equations, in the middle of which is written, “then a miracle occurs.”

To elaborate, the PTI’s strategy was built almost entirely on two points: an end to drone strikes and an offer of talks to the militants. However, the PTI was never going to have any control over the former and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan have never been interested in talks. The only other element of the PTI strategy was the pious hope that the Insafians’ mere presence in the corridors of power would lead to the Taliban giving up violence and embracing their Muslim brethren.

Unfortunately for the PTI, their taking over the reins of governance in the northwest has not prodded the Taliban into giving up arms. If anything, it has done the opposite; a development which has produced epic amounts of confusion within the party. The net result is that the relationship between the PTI provincial government and the Taliban resembles nothing more right now than that between a battered spouse and an abusive husband. I walked into a door. The media is responsible for the blasts. It was my fault.

Like most abusive relationships, this one too is destined to end badly. The only question is how many innocent Pakistanis will suffer because of Khan’s delusions. In the real world, stupidity has consequences. In the real world, stupidity is lethal.

Lest you think I am being too gloomy, that somehow everything will work out for the best, the fact is that everything doesn’t always work out for the best. History is full of monsters just like it is full of people who died because they didn’t believe in monsters.

Hitler forced World War II. That resulted in the deaths of 50 million people. Chairman Mao killed 45 million Chinese with his folly known as the Great Leap Forward. Stalin deliberately starved 10 million Russians to death. There are plenty of lesser known monsters, too. Remember Idi Amin? He supposedly kept his enemies’ heads in the fridge. Jean-Bédel Boukassa, the self-proclaimed emperor of the Central African Republic reportedly liked snacking on his enemies. Pol Pot exterminated more than a quarter of his own country’s population in a quixotic attempt to remake Cambodia from scratch.

These are not isolated events. Believing something does not make it so. If your policy is stupid, believing in it will not change the consequences of that policy. Alice Lakwena, the original leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army used to tell her followers that rubbing holy cocoa butter on their bodies would make them impervious to bullets. Lots of her followers believed in her and consequently lots of her followers died. Unstinting belief may not be a cure for stupidity. But death is.

As it turns out, death is a pretty good cure for extremism as well. Of course, the only thing our political leaders agree on is that there can be no military action against the extremists until that action is agreed upon by all and sundry. But that is a lie. Article 245(1) of the Constitution states in clear terms that the federal government is responsible for directing the armed forces in defending Pakistan against external aggression or the threat of war. That responsibility is not dependent upon a Parliamentary consensus or the consent of all parties.

Let us be clear. The call for consensus is only an excuse for doing nothing. There are those who ask for consensus because they profit from the status quo. And there are those who call for consensus because they are too scared to act otherwise. Either way, they are contemptible.

There is no “provocation” here. It helps if you keep your biases aside when reading something. But your reply is typical of Imran Khan’s worshippers, who just like to throw tantrums when someone dares criticize their Dear Leader.

I am from Fata and i know wat we want … if war was solution then this matter wud have been solved in 10 years … do u have any reason why our army is not able to clear FATA in such a long period …

Solution is to sort out groups who are ready to talk and then go for military action for the rest … u cant treat all as same bro …

go get some life … come out of ur mouse hole .. visit fata … talk to people who live there n then tell us wat does they want …

Reply
Ali S October 5, 2013 - 4:22 pm

Well then the people of FATA need to decide whose side they want to be on – and the ones who are in favor of Pakistan need to clearly distance themselves from their more ‘explosive’ brethren, whether they share bloodlines or not. To the average onlooker it seems like most people from FATA believe that eternal warfare is in their blood and they have no interest whatsoever in being governed by the constitution of Pakistan. If they want to keep their region a dozen centuries behind, I say we give them a semi-autonomous status (since the writ of government is pretty much useless there), cordon off the area from the rest of KPK (or as much as practically possible) and let them do as they please.

Why do you think the constitution of Pakistan applies to FATA only when you feel a need to shed more blood there? Why do the citizens of FATA not enjoy their other constitutional rights i.e having the same level of educational, health, economic and social facilities? Is it too much to ask? While I do not agree with imran khan’s simplistic views on this situation you seem to think that the real problem is his lack of understanding…the war has been going on for over a decade. What clever solutions did our military leadership or the PPP govt. have that we should be so worked up about IK’s policy

Reply
Ali S October 5, 2013 - 4:27 pm

PTI trolls don’t want to face the truth. After all, why would they, it’s far more comfortable keeping their heads buried in the sand. I voted for PTI in May and I regret that decision. Fact remains IK is completely clueless and spineless as a politician. Where is his chest-thumping Pakhtun pride when thousands of Pakistanis are massacred by the TTP, and instead he meekly bends over for peace talks? If Pakhtuns are strong believers in “blood for blood”, this guy is a disgrace to Pakhtuns. Well written Feisal.

It is not only the vision Imran has of the Pakhtun warrior, it is because of his deep rooted conviction that as a ‘new born Muslim’ he always has being guided directly by God. He has been given a mission. With such a mindset, there is no place for doubt; there can’t be any doubt for someone like Imran. He cares a damn about the real world you are talking about, his real world is beyond yours. So, what the hell? Imran is a very dangerous person and he will remain so till the end. The bloodshed will continue and Imran has found a way to be remembered in history.

Excellent article, Mr Naqvi. Your assessment of the situation is dead on – pun intended. IK has his head up the proverbial you know what and interestingly one is beginning to see some differences in his opinion and the official party position. Mr Khan unfortunately is on the path to self destruction, politically speaking. However in all honesty he is neither the whole problem nor as you said has the solution. I am afraid the entire political leadership is guilty of serious delusion and the people will continue to pay a very heavy price for the foreseeable future.

It amazes me how naive and blind all these new age bloggers are. First things first – this was not caused by IK. The entire problem started when everyone’s favorite (including me) General Musharraf took the country to War by scaring the public off the threats of ‘Going back to stone age’. Well who is living in stone-age now? Iran received 5 Million threats in the last 3-4 decades resulting in a “cordial phone conversation” – a historic event. General Mushi was either sold or spineless. Now, coming to present day. All parties have agreed to negotiate not just PTI what worse can happen if they fail? Military action. IK is aware of that. The effort of offering to negotiate will make them ‘T’ less of a hero in local public’s eye. UK negotiated with BLA after 80 Years while Tamils were bludgeoned by Sri Lankan government after 3 decades of Civil War. All solutions work……The Coalition forces failed to control these occurrences in Afg/Iraq or elsewhere so to expect wonders from PTI with just 5 months at the helm is plain stupidity. It is absurd that now all the blame is directed towards IK now and what, how and who of the past are irrelevant just like that. Lastly, everyone is acting ‘T’ these days and this is “Lashoon Kee Siyasat”.

Reply
Jawaid October 5, 2013 - 9:38 pm

Imran Khan’s toxic ideology will destroy his country if he continues to be the mouth piece of Islamists and continues to persist with his policy of appeasement of Islamo-fascists. His party’s supporters need to realize that instead of trolling on websites and throwing insults at people they don’t agree with, they need to question their leader and try to nudge him and his party to face the reality that the more you “negotiate” with Islamists, the more powerful and destructive they become. If IK does not accept this basic fact, then it’s time to impeach him and ban his party for good because the country is more important than one megalomaniac leader.

LOL… Great Khan is being compared to a character played by Jim Carry. Same Khan that had everything in life and gave at all for serving a better cause in life i.e. serving undeserved and unappreciated Pakistanis. He is being compared to truman for proposing a solution(may or might not work) to a very complex issue faced by the country. All he is saving proposing is to open up a dialogue with talibans and if it does not work, look for other alternatives but its too difficult for Pakistanis media and so called journalists to comprehend seeing talibans opening up an office. If Americans do it its fine but we cant do it… logic? what would one expect from anyone love watching and enjoying Indian movies..
To Author, you might want to take a diiferent photo because no one is going to take you seriously with the smirk on your face in your current photo.. You are the one trying to look like some character played by Jim carry. Dumb and Dumber part 2?

While this is in no way an ad hominem appraisal, that the KPK would rather see consensus on talk and subsequent clarity to expose/marginalise/weed out groups unwilling to toe the line belies the unwitting “bomb anyway” mantra trotted out by people at convenient removes from the daily atrocities incurred by longsuffering denizens of the tribal belt. Naqviis the one in unreal fantasy, completely ignoring the horrors of being at war aren’t 100000 dead enough to give peace a chance u advocate dialogue with India the bonafide enemy why not dialogue with the misguided Taliban if slightest hope of peace is there.
Naqvi marrying juggan does not mean all the world is a model stop fantasising and think of those spending nights under drones u glorify Malala fair enough but what about Nabeela whose grandmother was droned to death and only 5 congressmen out of 435 turn up to listen to her. U guys are the inhumane lot who just for getting blog space in Newsweek advocate war for next 50 years.
Shameful indeed at least imran wants peace wants an end to this war.

So what was the point of this article?? The writer needs to come out of the closet… I smell the stench of a fascist war mongerer who’s finding it very hard to spell it out to the readers …” The federal govt should nuke the tribals and then slowly exterminate these pesty Pashtuns causing all this trouble for us normal folks”..

Mr. Naqvi, Bravo! agree with every word of yours. sooner or later all those supporters of Mr. Khan will realize, the deal was unfavourable for the nation’s progress as a whole. Mr. Khan’s ties and allies with the who’s and who of the right wing are becoming more evident. The sad part is, that PTI going to replace Jamat Islami and become new minion of our establishment?
most probably, yes. And then nation’s memory shouldn’t blur and history is known to everyone. Gen. Zia’s vision is being nurtured in the most modern ways! IK is just another icon to deliver the old package.

Very disappointing to see a piece of writing resulting from abusive thoughts & negative depiction of the real scenario, & than they say that “IK supporters abuse them”……but here situation is otherwise…….

Nothing but disarranged and poorly researched article. It depects the intellectual level of the author (Mr. Naqvi) who has no idea and no hollestic perpective on the status quo and what country’s “vision” should be. This is doing nothing but giving air to more chaos and senselessness; a hapless attempt to link unrelated events with the background of PTI’s “anit-drone” philosophy. Go do your research and maybe then you be able to see the reality.
