Six civilians wounded in separate assaults in restive province.

Two policemen were killed and six civilians were wounded in two separate attacks on Thursday in Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa province, officials said.

In the first attack, a remote control bomb planted on a roadside exploded in Peshawar killing a police constable and injuring six civilians. “Exact target of the bomb has not been determined at the moment but the explosion killed a policeman who was deputed guard of a retired judge and was on his way to duty,” said Wasim Riaz, a senior police official in the area, adding that six civilians were injured in the attack. “Two of the injured are critical,” he said.

In another attack, two gunmen riding a motorbike fired at a senior police official in Dera Ismail Khan as he was coming out of a mosque after evening prayers. The police official was identified as a deputy superintendent Noor Mohammed who previously served in the counter terrorism department.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Pakistan last month announced it had cleared the last militant stronghold in the country’s tribal areas, which have been home to Taliban and Al Qaeda militants. However, scattered small intensity militant attacks continue to take place.
